This ceramic mug features a female (long beak) and male (short beak) huia bird perched amongst native puriri and pōhutukawa flora. The huia, one of Aotearoa's most treasured and now extinct native birds, was once the largest of the wattlebird species, renowned for its melodious song and striking black glossy feathers with white-tipped tails. The last confirmed huia sighting occurred in 1907, with some reports of female huia lingering into the 1920s.

For Katy, the depiction of huia birds serves as a poignant reminder of the significant impact humans have on the planet. These birds symbolize the beauty of Aotearoa’s taonga and emphasize our duty to protect and nurture what remains of our natural heritage.
